To Fungi or not to Fungi…

Fungi are a diverse group of eukaryotic organisms including yeast, molds and mushrooms

They are not plants or animals but rather form their own kingdom of life.

Fungi play a crucial role in ecosystems including decomposition, nutrient cycling and forming beneficial relationships with plants.

They are also both beneficial and harmful impacts on humans serving as a food sour e and also for medicins BUT also causing infections and other medical issues like ringworm and athlete’s foot.

What are some of the commonly found fungi at the Park?

  • Fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) - this iconic fungus is easily recognizable by its bright red cap with white spots. Normally located around pine trees

  • Coral fungi (Ramaria sp) - these fungi have branching, coral like structures and come in various colours.

  • Hygrocybe Julietae - this type is a type of waxcap mushroom
