The Great Debate: To Plinth or not to Plinth

A plinth ALWAYS has an agenda.  Usually subtle, but always influential.  At first glance it is just a structure that raises a sculpture or statue off the ground and up to eye level.  But let's do a double take and enter the mind of the artist and curator as they grapple with the tricky decision of  'to plinth or not to plinth'.

There are so many levels of subtle influence and practicalities that need to be considered.  Will a plinth add to the work's perceived value, importance or desirability?  Will it strengthen the narrative, add tension or balance to a story.  Will it convey the right political message? Is it safe?  Does it make the work LOOK GOOD and worthy of Attention?! Or will it unwittingly do the opposite?

Of course curators love grappling with all of this.  It's why we do it.  But what do you think?  Are you a viewer, a maker or a curator?   Do you have an opinion or questions to add to the mix?    Please do join us at the Park in what promises to be a lively and insightful conversation.
