The Portal Project

The Portal Project shows that from destruction of nature there can be new life. Conifer Canyon which was destroyed in Cyclone Gabrielle and what was once a stretch of strong trees and vegetation became a barren sad stretch of land.

Marcus Tatton is creating a new art piece using the destroyed trees and giving a new meaning to the area with the Portal Project.

TThe Portal is a rebuilding after the massive destruction from Cyclone Gabrielle in Feb 2023. The trees that were ripped from the canyon sides were planted 30 years earlier and well established for perpetuity… more than 100 came down into Conifer Canyon.

Portal represents the rebirthing of one’s own experience, of one’s own consciousness

This project is the re-ordering from an initial sense of chaos. The wind-thrown trees are re-ordered into this giant land art intervention. This construction system has been developed by Marcus Tatton over recent decades, in sculpture statements around the world. This intervention echoes the restoration of the chaos of the derelict quarry started more than thirty years ago to rebirth the land, internal and beyond… through establishing an arboretum for Art-in-Nature.
